About Holy Communion

Holy Communion, or Eucharist, is one of the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. The First Holy Communion Sacrament is usually scheduled for children 7 or 8 years old, when the child is old enough to seek and understand what Holy Communion represents. Months and sometimes years of study and preparation lead up to the big event. Children usually wear new, fancy dresses and suits for the occasion.

First Holy Communion is not to be taken lightly. It is the first time that a child receives the Holy Host, or Eucharist. Reception of the Eucharist is a large part of being Catholic. First Holy Communion is an event that is usually celebrated with family and friends, because it enables the child to become more a part of the church service. Children not old enough to receive Holy Communion must wait in the pew of the church while others old enough, that have received their First Communion, proceed to receive the Eucharist at a Catholic Mass.
